Yachad: A Night of Support and Solidarity with Displaced Israeli Families

November 3, 2023

On November 3rd, 2023, we had the incredible privilege of hosting over 40 boys and girls—recently arrived from Israel—who came to Toronto seeking temporary relief following the tragic events of October 15th. It was a beautiful evening of warmth, connection, and smiles, reminding us of the power of community and the difference we can make together.

Basketball, Art, Treats, and Prizes

The night was packed with activities designed to let the kids relax, have fun, and just be kids. Our incredible coaches—Justin and Yarden for the boys, and Liron and Noa for the girls—ran a fun and engaging basketball clinic alongside our adult players and volunteers. Laughter and cheers filled the gym as the kids dribbled, passed, and played their hearts out.

For those looking for a quieter outlet, Eden Yerushalmi led a wonderful art therapy session, giving the kids a chance to unwind, get creative, and connect through art.

The kids were also treated to plenty of treats, including popcorn and cotton candy (generously sponsored by Rich Winkler), and a delicious pizza and falafel dinner provided by Tov-Li.

To top it all off, the night ended on an extra exciting note as the kids got to pick prizes from a full table of options. From cool chess boards to watches, jerseys, and more, there was something for everyone. Watching their faces light up as they selected their prizes was a highlight of the evening.

Inspiring Words and Togetherness

The event opened with heartfelt remarks from Founder and CEO Yair Shpiler, who shared the care and support of the Toronto Jewish community for these families. We were also honored to welcome MPP Laura Smith and Ontario’s Mental Health Minister, Michael Tibollo, both of whom offered warm words of encouragement and solidarity for the families.

Rabbi Landa of the Chabad Hebrew Community Centre then led everyone in a moving Shema prayer, uniting the room in hope and faith for peace and safety in Israel.

One particularly touching moment came when a mother shared that this was the first time her two little sons had smiled in close to a month. With her husband called up for reserves, she expressed how grateful she was to have a few hours of relief, knowing her children were happy and cared for.

A Community That Cares

This evening was a true example of what it means to come together as a community. Beyond the fun and games, we provided these families with Walmart gift cards and began addressing further needs to ensure they feel welcomed and supported during their time in Toronto.

“Yachad” means together, and that’s exactly what this night was about. From basketball and art to music, prizes, and heartfelt connection, we were able to give these kids and their families a night of joy and comfort when they needed it most.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible—our volunteers, sponsors, and supporters. Your kindness and generosity truly made a difference.

Am Yisrael Chai. ❤️✡️
