Jewnity Sports Tips Off with an Unforgettable Opening Night

October 15, 2023

What a night! Jewnity Sports officially launched its first-ever Men’s Basketball season, and the energy in the room was electric. With 85 players from across Toronto’s Jewish community coming together, it was more than just basketball—it was about unity, pride, and showing off what makes us special.

From the Court to the Heart: A Night to Remember

The night kicked off with a bang as MC Yosef Zelfman welcomed everyone in his signature lively style. Right from the start, it was clear that this wasn’t just any basketball league. Players were treated to an NBA-style media day, complete with professional photos in their custom jerseys, socks, kippot, and even athletic tzitzit—a unique touch that screamed, “We’re proud to be Jewish, and we’re ready to play!”

Before the first whistle, we all took a moment to unite in reciting Tehillim for the safety and well-being of our brothers and sisters in Israel. It was a powerful reminder of the deeper meaning behind this league.

We were honored to have Rabbi Markowitz from Monsey, NY join us and share a few words of wisdom. Then, Edward Kholodenko, CEO and President of Questrade (our title sponsor), delivered an inspiring speech about living our Jewish pride everywhere—at work, at home, in the synagogue, and yes, even on the court.

Rabbi Benny Kamchaji took the mic and brought it all home with an inspiring message about “knowing Hashem in all our ways.” He reminded us that even basketball can be a way to connect to something bigger—a fresh perspective for the night ahead.

Fuel, Focus, and First Games

Of course, no Jewish event is complete without great food, and Elite Salads absolutely delivered. A delicious, healthy spread and kept everyone fueled up for what was about to be a competitive evening.

Players also got the VIP treatment from Michael Peskin and the Grit Performance crew, who offered pre-game massages and stretches. Talk about starting the season right!

Then, it was game time. The gym came alive as the players hit the court, ready to put months of planning into action.

  1. Grit Performance Chaballers 46 – Olive Branch Scrappy Coco 37
Alex Morris stole the show, leading the Chaballers to their first win with an MVP-worthy performance.
  2. Heritage Home Design Matzah Ballers 36 – Zhalco Construction Macallans 36ers
Nir Spivak showed up and showed out, carrying the Matzah Ballers to victory in a game full of promise for what’s to come this season.

More Than Basketball

This wasn’t just about who scored the most points. The Jewnity Sports League is about so much more—bringing people together, strengthening our community, and showing that being Jewish isn’t just something we do in the synagogue. It’s who we are, whether we’re at work, at home, or playing ball.

As the night wrapped up, you could feel the excitement for what’s ahead this season. We’re not just building teams; we’re building connections, pride, and a sense of unity that goes way beyond the court.

Here’s to an incredible season ahead. Go Jewnity! 🏀✡️
